Why Thick, Curly Hair Takes More Time—and Why the Price May Be Different

Why Thick, Curly Hair Takes More Time—and Why the Price May Be Different

One of our regular clients at My Us Hair and Body has very thick, naturally curly hair.

She visits us for professional scalp and hair care. Although the main treatment may be similar to what another client receives, the appointment does not finish at the same time.

Her hair needs careful detangling, smaller sections and a much longer drying process. If she wants a smooth blow-dry rather than her natural curl finish, the styling portion alone requires considerable additional work.

This is something clients sometimes find difficult to understand:

“Why does my hair take longer when I booked the same service?”

The simple answer is that a service name may be the same, but the amount of work required can be very different.

Hair Length Is Only One Part of the Appointment

Salon menus often use hair length to help estimate a starting price.

For example, prices may be based on short, medium or long hair. However, two clients with hair of the same length can require completely different appointment times.

One client may have fine, straight, shoulder-length hair.

Another client may have shoulder-length hair with very high density and tight curls.

Although the visible length is similar, the second client may have several times more hair to wash, section, treat, dry and style.

This is why hair length alone cannot always determine the final service time or price.

What Does Hair Density Mean?

Hair density refers to how many strands are growing within an area of the scalp.

Someone can have fine individual strands but a very large number of them. Another person can have thick individual strands but lower overall density.

Higher-density hair normally requires:

  • More sections

  • More shampoo and conditioner

  • More treatment product

  • More colour or straightening product

  • Longer rinsing

  • Longer drying

  • More detailed checking between layers

When the hair is down, this additional density may not be immediately obvious. Once we begin separating the hair, the true amount of work becomes much clearer.

Why Curly Hair Requires Careful Handling

Curly hair should not simply be brushed and pulled through as quickly as possible.

Each curl pattern may behave differently, and the hair may be more prone to tangling, dryness or breakage through the ends.

Before a service, we may need to:

  1. Examine the natural curl pattern

  2. Identify tangled or fragile areas

  3. Apply conditioner where needed

  4. Detangle gently from the ends upwards

  5. Divide the hair into manageable sections

  6. Avoid unnecessary tension

  7. Consider how much the hair will shrink when dry

Rushing these steps can make the service uncomfortable and may compromise the finish.

The extra time is not wasted time. It allows the stylist to work carefully and respect the condition and texture of the hair.

Why the Shampoo Takes Longer

A professional shampoo on very dense hair involves more than applying shampoo to the surface.

Water and cleanser need to reach the scalp through the full density of the hair. The stylist must work around the hairline, crown, behind the ears and nape while ensuring that the scalp and hair are rinsed thoroughly.

If the client has used heavy styling creams, oils, gels or dry shampoo, additional cleansing may be required.

A head spa or scalp treatment can also take longer because the stylist needs to ensure that:

  • The scalp is accessible

  • Product is distributed evenly

  • Dense sections are rinsed completely

  • No treatment residue is trapped near the roots

  • The hair is detangled safely afterwards

Incomplete rinsing can leave thick hair feeling heavy or coated, so this part of the service should not be rushed.

Why More Product May Be Required

Professional product usage is another important factor.

A standard amount of colour, treatment or straightening product may be enough for fine or lower-density hair. The same quantity may not adequately cover very thick hair.

Using too little product can cause:

  • Uneven colour saturation

  • Missed sections

  • Patchy straightening

  • Inconsistent treatment coverage

  • Different results between the surface and underneath layers

For an even result, every necessary section must receive the correct amount of product.

Additional product is not used simply because the hair looks large. It is used because there are more strands and more surface area to cover.

Why the Blow-Dry Can Become a Separate Major Service

For very thick or curly hair, drying is often one of the longest parts of the appointment.

The process may include:

  • Gentle detangling

  • Removing excess water

  • Applying appropriate heat protection

  • Dividing the hair into small sections

  • Drying the roots properly

  • Working through each internal layer

  • Smoothing or defining the ends

  • Checking that hidden sections are fully dry

  • Finishing according to the client’s preferred style

Hair can appear dry on the surface while remaining damp underneath.

If dense hair is left damp near the scalp, it may feel uncomfortable and lose its finished shape quickly. A thorough professional blow-dry therefore requires the stylist to check the internal sections, not just the visible surface.

Natural Curl Finish and Smooth Finish Are Different Services

The desired finish also affects the time required.

A client may choose to:

  • Keep and define the natural curls

  • Stretch the curls while maintaining volume

  • Create a soft, smooth blow-dry

  • Achieve a straighter, polished finish

  • Add waves after smoothing

These finishes require different techniques, tools and appointment times.

Drying curls with a diffuser is not necessarily a quick process, especially when the hair is dense. The roots and internal sections still need to be dried carefully without creating unnecessary frizz.

A smooth blow-dry may require small sections and repeated brush work through each layer. If hot tools are also requested, more time may be needed.

For this reason, showing the stylist a photograph of the desired finish before the service is extremely helpful.

The Same Applies to Colour and Straightening

Density and curl pattern can significantly affect chemical services.

During colour or straightening, the stylist may need to create many small, controlled sections so that the product is applied evenly.

If the sections are too large:

  • Inner strands may not receive enough product

  • Colour may appear patchy

  • Resistant curls may not process evenly

  • Some areas may become overprocessed while others remain unchanged

Long, dense or strongly curled hair may therefore require more appointment time and additional product.

Previous colour, bleach, keratin or straightening history must also be considered. Different areas may require different formulas or processing methods.

The goal is not to complete the service as quickly as possible. It is to achieve the most consistent result the condition of the hair can safely manage.

Why an Additional Charge May Apply

An additional charge should reflect the extra resources required to complete the service properly.

Depending on the service, these may include:

  • Additional appointment time

  • Extra product

  • A longer or more technical blow-dry

  • More sections and detailed application

  • Additional assistance

  • Extra finishing work

It should not be viewed as a penalty for having thick or curly hair.

The charge relates to the amount of work involved and the time that must be reserved so the stylist does not need to rush the client or delay the next appointment.

At My Us Hair and Body, we believe this should be discussed before the main service begins whenever possible.

Why “From” Prices Are Used

Many salon services are advertised with a price beginning with the word “from.”

A starting price usually reflects a standard amount of time and product. The final quote may change after the stylist considers:

  • Hair length

  • Hair density

  • Curl pattern

  • Current hair condition

  • Previous chemical history

  • Amount of product required

  • Desired finish

  • Expected appointment time

This is why an in-person consultation—or clear photographs before booking—can be important for complex services.

A front, side and back photograph of the hair in its natural condition can help the salon reserve a more suitable amount of time.

However, the most accurate quotation is normally provided after the stylist sees and assesses the hair directly.

A Realistic Appointment Is Better Than a Rushed Appointment

Underestimating thick or curly hair can create problems for everyone.

The client may feel rushed, the stylist may struggle to complete the finish, and the following customer may experience a delay.

Reserving enough time allows us to:

  • Work in appropriate sections

  • Protect the condition of the hair

  • Apply products evenly

  • Dry the hair thoroughly

  • Create the requested finish

  • Explain suitable home care

A realistic booking creates a calmer and more professional experience.

What Clients Can Tell Us When Booking

If you have very thick, curly or extra-long hair, please let the salon know when making the appointment.

Helpful information includes:

  • Approximate hair length

  • Whether your hair is fine or coarse

  • Whether the density is very high

  • Your natural curl pattern

  • Whether it tangles easily

  • Previous colour or chemical services

  • Whether you want a natural or smooth finish

  • Photographs of your current hair

  • A photograph of your desired result

This information is not used to judge the hair. It helps us reserve the correct appointment time and provide a clearer estimate.

Our Approach at My Us Hair and Body

We do not believe thick or curly hair should be rushed.

The hair deserves enough time for careful cleansing, sectioning, product application, drying and finishing.

We also believe clients should understand why additional time or cost may apply. Clear consultation and transparent pricing help prevent surprises at the end of the appointment.

Two clients can book the same service, but their hair may require different amounts of time, product and technique.

The service name may be the same.

The work involved may not be.
